So, Now What?

Once you have a few blends in mind, it’s time to begin experimenting. As we briefly mentioned earlier, you’ll want to start off with a 1:1 ratio for all of the essential oils that you’re adding to your blend. Take a whiff of what it smells like and then add new drops accordingly.

It might be a good idea to work on several different batches at once. Take plenty of small vials, fill them with carrier oils, and begin experimenting with drop counts. Make sure you’re taking note of the number of drops you’ve added, so you know the exact recipe that you like best.

Also, note that the sample blends that we went over in each section aren’t definitive. You can feel free to add new essential oils to the blend or even replace some to add your favourite oil to your blend. You might even want to combine the different effects that we went over (i.e., Sleep & anti-anxiety).

How Many Drops Should You Use?

There’s nothing that says that you have to use the same number of drops for every essential oil that you add to your blend. While you might like consistency, it’s quite clear that certain essential oils are much more overpowering than others. You’ll have to play around with the number of drops to see which scent you like best!

If you notice that one scent seems to be taking over the entire blend, add a drop or two of the other oils you’ve used to reduce the intensity. Just remember to keep track of how many drops you’re adding in total. Using too many drops in a carrier oil will begin to increase the intensity and strength of your blend.

One way to avoid ruining an entire batch is by adding one drop at a time. If you like the way it’s turning out, keep adding what you like. Otherwise, you might end up with six overwhelming drops of spearmint and only four drops remaining. If you know anything about minty scents, that’s just not possible!

Essential Oils Dilution Chart

When you’re creating your own essential oil blends at home, it’s extremely important that you’re mixing your essential oils with a carrier oil. These carrier oils include coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, and so on.

You need to combine essential oils with carrier oils to dilute the strength and intensity of your essential oils. Otherwise, your essential oils could be too strong and cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction.

Here’s what you need to know about the chart below.

The top row of the chart (with the percentages) describes the strength of your essential oil blend. If you’re an adult and looking to use your blend on yourself, focus on the 3% column of the chart. For children and babies, you’ll want to use 1% or less. Severe cases or treatments might call for 5% or more.

The left column of the chart (with the mL) is the size of the carrier oil bottle. The numbers in the middle of the chart describe the number of drops of essential oils that you’ll be adding. So, for a 3% dilution ratio with a 10 mL bottle of carrier oil, you’ll need to add six drops total. Keep in mind that this number is the total number of drops between all of the oils you’re adding.
