According to the World Health Organisation, depression is a worldwide phenomenon affecting at least 350 million people across the globe. What makes this sad statistic even grimmer is the fact that only 20% of depression victims seek treatment.
Apart from the stigma, there is a lot of reluctance from many people to seek medicinal treatment for mental sicknesses not considered serious enough. Luckily, there is a very effective workaround: essential oils for depression.
Research has shown that some essential oils for depression will not only relieve the symptoms of depression but they will ultimately help you manage the condition properly. Furthermore, there are no side effects. The following are some of the top essential oils for depression:
Wild ginger oil
Wild ginger oil has antidepressant qualities. This was established in a 2014 animal study which revealed that mice that inhaled wild ginger had a drastic reduction in their stress levels. Wild ginger achieves this by activating the serotonergic system, which leads to a reduction in secretion of stress hormones.
Lavender oil has an earthy floral scent that can help decrease stress, relieve anxiety, promote relaxation and ultimately improve your mood. Research has also established that a tincture of lavender can be used in adjuvant therapy for the treatment of mild depression.
Rose and Ylang-ylang oils
These two essential oils have an awesome calming and relaxing effect. In addition to this, they also alleviate depression by decreasing the autonomic functions like heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.
Bergamot oil has a citrus scent that has a calming and uplifting effect. Patients that were subjected to bergamot aromatherapy in a recent study registered a significant drop in anxiety levels. In as much as anxiety is different from depression, there is no denying that they happen simultaneously. Dealing with anxiety therefore helps reduce the symptoms of depression.
The aforementioned essential oils for depression can be used in different ways. You could allow the scent to saturate the environment and breathe it in with air or you could directly inhale their scents.
Other methods include adding a couple of drops of the oil to your usual massage oil, adding the drops to your bathtub to create your own aromatherapy bath, or even dapping a piece of cloth with a few drops of the essential oil and inhaling it directly.
